By plane and rental car

You can fly to Lisbon or Oporto. Usually Lisbon is taken because this airport is closest to the destination. Moreover, Lisbon airport is located north-east of the city so you don’t have to drive through the city to drive north.

Many airlines such as TAP, Ryanair, EasyJet, Britisch Airways and many others offer regular outbound and return flights to Lisbon from numerous airports in the UK.

As far as the rental car is concerned, there is also a choice between companies and types of car. It is best to reserve a car from home. This is cheaper than renting it locally. It is possible with companies that have a service and a car park at the airport itself or with a company that can be reached with a shuttle bus just outside the airport. The latter are usually cheaper. We have had good experiences with the all-in approach of Sunnycars.

You can also have a device installed for the automatic payment of tolls (Via Verde), which is the most practical. You then drive through the Via Verde toll gates on the toll motorway lanes. The payment is then made by the car hire company using your credit card.

From Lisbon it is about 90 km or 1 hour drive to your destination in Salir do Porto. The main part of the route runs along the A8, a newly built and quiet motorway. If you wish to fly to Porto, the route is about 250 km and about 2 hours 20 minutes away.

By car

Portugal has a fairly new motorway network in good condition, for which tolls also have to be paid on many stretches. On some motorways you can pay manually, on others there is only electronic toll. For the latter you need to have your number plate linked to your credit card when entering Portugal. This can easily be done at a vending machine, usually at the first motorway car park after entering Portugal. The payment will then be done automatically via that card. You can find an overview of which toll processing applies to which routes via the following link:
